Part-time/20 hours per week

Location: Remote/VIrtual - Must Live in Michigan

Purpose: Advance Peace reduces gun violence in U.S. urban neighborhoods by providing transformational opportunities to young men involved in lethal firearm offenses and placing them in a high-touch, personalized fellowship.

MPHI is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Peacekeeper for Lansing Advance Peace. Peacekeeper is a part-time hourly position working in street outreach and services coordination. Initially under close supervision, incumbents must exercise discretion and good judgment in working with confidential materials and often function as the first point of contact that members of the community have with Advance Peace. Incumbents provide street outreach and tailored engagement, and services referral on behalf of selected community members. Incumbents also effectively mediate street level conflicts that could elevate to gun violence. Incumbents may elevate their status after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualification of the higher level NCA class.

The primary objective of Advance Peace is to reduce local gun violence within a culturally competent and trauma responsive framework. Candidates are expected to represent Advance Peace publicly and should possess a high level of emotional intelligence and be able to effectively engage the public around issues related to gun violence intervention and interruption.

The selected candidates will have significant influence over our local success and future direction. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of exceptional leadership and teamwork, as well as analytical and strategic thinking skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and refinement of protocols for addressing and reducing community conflict associated with gun violence.
  • Assists in mediating high level street conflicts, and referring and guiding selected residents through the processes of case management, social, educational, employment and other various support services, etc.
  • Maintain constant community presence by conducting daily outreach to individuals involved in gun related conflict, their friends, associates, and families; share information about available services and resources; work to ensure community knowledge of Advance Peace activities.
  • Attend meetings with the team on a daily/weekly basis to share contacts, outcomes and ensure that all clients are being appropriately served.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of appropriate client documentation, record keeping, and program assessment and refinement with special attention to confidentiality concerns.
  • Develop relationships for the purposes of referral with service delivery providers, particularly education, behavioral health and employment and training agencies and resources.
  • Establish relationships with community, faith-based and governmental organizations with interests in addressing gun violence and providing opportunities for those involved in gun violence.
  • Translate work related issues and material into understandable written and oral formats; communicates clearly, can compose, and organize timely and informative weekly and monthly reports.
  • Follows-up on program participants at specified intervals to ascertain programming status, challenges, outcomes, and opportunities in real time.
  • Represent the best interests of MPHI and our stakeholders/partners at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Selected individuals must meet the background screening and requirements applicable to all persons who provide and coordinate outreach services as a Peacekeeper.
  • Selected individuals must abide by all Advance Peace and local operator agency policies and procedures applicable to persons who will have contact with selected outreach individuals.
  • This shall include, but not be limited to, all laws, rules, and regulations regarding the confidentiality of client information.

Education: High School Diploma or GED or equivalent experience.

Experience: Two (2) years of violence prevention/intervention (interruption) experience and/or community development (organizing/engagement) experience required.

  • Understands public health models of violence prevention/intervention as demonstrated by two (2) years of prior related experience.
  • Prior experience with the law enforcement system, e.g., firearms or gang activity related convictions.
  • 3-5 years without negative law enforcement contact; no probation or parole violations
  • 2-years demonstrated effective work in communities with high-risk individuals and/or intensive youth development related programs.
  • Deep Relationships in and knowledge of community of focus, and ability to negotiate and navigate across community/geographical lines effectively and safely.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, specifically as it relates to effectively working with diverse groups of youth, young adults, community, and public system stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated sound conflict prevention, conflict de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Michigan Driver's License. Reliable Transportation. Ability to pass a Drug Test.
  • Requires sufficient mobility to work in a neighborhood/community (street level) setting as well as a typical office setting.
  • Express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word to impart verbal information to clients or to the general public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately and quickly.
  • Sufficient vision to read printed materials, and hearing and speech sufficient to exchange information in person or over the telephone duties also require mobility to attend meetings during the day or evening.
  • Must be able to withstand diverse environmental conditions.
  • Meet routine deadlines with sufficient lead time; handle variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated, and some interruptions may occur; have advance notice on inconvenience and travel; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor. Neighborhood Change Agents must be residents of the Lansing and will be expected to travel outside of the city from time-to-time.
