Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the unit assistant provides clerical support for Patient Care Units(s) including admission, discharge, transfer, medical records, receptionist and quality control. Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situation according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education. The Unit Clerk follows the Henry Ford Health System Team Member Standards of Excellence in all interactions.

PRINCIPALS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Unit Assistant is responsible for many tasks and responsibilities that are detailed in the attached task list. The top priorities for all Unit Assistants are:

  1. Customer Service
  2. Answer phones and facilitate communication between the nursing unit and callers
  3. Respond to call lights
  4. Clerical processing of new admissions including creating patient charts, other duties define by unit (i.e. MyChart enrollment)
  5. Scheduling of post-discharge appointment with patient following the established business unit process.
  6. During downtime, process and back-enter non-medication orders placed during downtime. a. Maintain downtime paper forms
  7. Perform monthly maintenance of BCA, printer and unit report.
  8. Notify appropriate resources for maintenance, track all requests and statuses for unit clinical, telecommunication (phone system) and computer equipment.
  9. Contacts consultative services per business unit process.
  10. Process patient information after discharge, including disposition in electronic health record (EHR) and breakdown of patient chart.
  11. Assist with coordination of interpreter services after collaboration with nursing staff.
  12. Performs cleaning of unit clinical, telecommunication (phone system) and computer equipment during each shift. Re-boots computer equipment if needed.
  13. Performs tasks related to emergency response activities.
  14. Performs purposeful rounding according to unit standards

Unit Description: The ED is a 32 bed department with 2 additional trauma rooms. We are a Level 3 trauma center, certification for Stoke and STEMI certified. We see all types of patients including pediatrics.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Work experience as a nurse assistant preferred or Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) preferred or are currently enrolled in a nursing program and have successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing.
  • Successful completion of introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit.
  • Visual/hearing/verbal ability required to receive calls, record information.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Complete BLS Heartsaver Certification during orientation
