Job Summary

Manages coding quality team processes and employees, whose primary function is to evaluate coding accuracy, provide coder education and facilitate greatest coding accuracy for all Corewell Health hospital and professional accounts. With senior coding leadership support, develops and facilitates all coding quality program initiatives and related activities.

Essential Functions

  • Manages all coding quality team activities as outlined among the Coding Quality Plan (CQP), including performance of employees engaged in evaluating and educating coding accuracy to facilitate correct inpatient Diagnostic Related Group (DRG) and outpatient Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) assignment for hospital patient accounts; and, diagnosis/procedure code assignment with all professional (physician) encounters. Provides pertinent direction to applicable industry coding accuracy guidance. Ensures employee competency and quality in all job duties while consulting with physicians, other care providers and departments to assess accurate diagnoses and procedures performed, related impact or risk explosure, etc.
  • Collaborates regularly with the Coding Operations teams, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and Concurrent Clinical Assurance Program (CCAP) teams, Quality team, Compliance team Clinical Operations team, fellow Revenue Cycle and other department teams where coding quality applies to best support Corewell Health outcomes.
  • Measures employee performance to ensure expected outcomes or identify opportunities; facilitates corrective action, other training and continuing education.
  • Actively contributes to development of and maintains accountability for departmental operating budget.
  • Develops, plans, organizes, oversees directly or delegates all coding quality team related work. Completes performance appraisals. Recommends and initiates personnel actions such as recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and corrective action

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree Health Information Management or related field preferred or equivalent years of experience.
  • 5 years of relevant experience Professional experience in acute healthcare coding industry Required
  • Experience in coding management, project management and process analysis Required
  • Skills, knowledge, abilities typically gained through related experience Required
  • Supervisory or Management experience Required
  • CRT-Coding Specialist (CCS) - AHIMA American Health Information Management Association Upon Hire required Or
  • CRT-Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - AHIMA American Health Information Management Association Upon Hire required Or
  • CRT-Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - AAPC American Academy of Professional Coders Upon Hire required
  • CRT-At least one Certification from preferred list - UNKNOWN Unknown 180 Days required
  • CRT-Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA) - HFMA Healthcare Financial Management Association 180 Days preferred Or
