Job Description
YOUR MISSION:
Optical engineering lead role in concept, design, development, modification, and evaluation of Panasonic head up display platforms, applying global strategies to accommodate North American market and other opportunities. Responsible for light source/illumination optics design, optical layout of freeform and non-freeform design, imaging design with reflective, refractive, diffractive and holographic optical elements, definition of optical materials and coatings, modeling of solar load, stray light, and controlling image distortion, quality and size in optical systems.

A DAY IN THE LIFE:
  • Collaborates with systems, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering to achieve required technical feasibility of designs.
  • Interfaces with Panasonic design teams locally and globally to ensure robust product designs.
  • Uses computer assisted engineering/design software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks.
  • Conducts simulation and testing to ensure the integrity of the designs at multiple stages in the development cycle.
  • Participates in development of design process procedures. Supports DV, PV, production development and launch of opto-mechanical systems and components.
  • Identification and interaction with external suppliers for prototype optical components. Determine optical component requirements and availability appropriate to product phase.
  • Develops optical coating specifications where required.
  • Supports development testing & evaluations, establishment and follow-up of DVP & R etc.
  • Performs standard product engineering tasks such as functional analysis, DFMEA, and other quality systems in regards to optics.
  • May employ quality improvements and supplier relations approach utilizing customer required formats such as Production Parts Approval Process (PPAP) and Advanced Production Quality Process (APQP) techniques.

MUST-HAVES:
  • Four-year College Degree in at least one STEM major (Science; Technology; Engineering; Math), specifically in Optical Engineering discipline including some coursework in optical design, ray-tracing analysis, tolerancing (mechanical/thermal), stray-light analysis and a minimum of Eight (8) years opto-mechanical design experience in electrical and/or optical products; or Fifteen (15) years opto-mechanical design experience in electrical and/or optical products.
  • Expertise in Zemax optical design software, including macro-writing, sensitivity analysis and tolerancing and MATLAB interfacing
  • Experience in illumination and imaging with reflective, refractive, diffractive and holographic optical elements
  • Experience with light source design (LED, OLED, laser, etc.) including light evaluation tools (Optis or equivalent
  • Experience with picture generation units (TFT LCD, DLP), polarizers, IR/UV cut filters, etc
  • Experience interfacing with optical component vendors, material selection and design for manufacturing for optical elements (resins, design for molding
  • Knowledge of basic Product Tooling & Manufacturing processes & lead times of the optical components
  • Active working knowledge of available optical coatings
  • Experience in precision setup of optical components
  • Familiarity with basic measurement devices to measure and characterize optical designs and resultant images
  • Experience with Simulation tools (Icepack, Light Tools, Ansys, etc) preferred.
  • Experience with CATIA CAD systems in an automotive tier one or automotive OEM preferred
  • Experience with CODE V, OPTIS software beneficial
  • Experience with OEM requirements for automotive camera or head up display including optical, thermal, environmental preferred
