Overview

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Department Manager to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection team in Southeast Michigan! The Department Manager is responsible for the professional, technical, management, marketing, administrative, and financial aspects of the discipline.


Join our Construction Engineering & Inspection professionals who successfully oversee project construction from pre-construction through finalization with an outstanding track record for cost and schedule containment. Our professional licensed engineers and certified construction staff have extensive on-the-job experience in supervision, observation, safety review and inspection with ongoing training that ensures required daily schedules are adhered to and all materials are procured and constructed according to plans and specifications. This experience includes heavy highway, single and multi-span bridges, intersection and traffic signal improvements, marine improvements, railroad upgrades, water/ wastewater transmission, and park and recreation construction.


Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, strategic/managerial direction, and guidance to achieve established financial and growth goals for the discipline.
  • Responsible for overall productivity, profitability, client satisfaction, and quality of work throughout the discipline.
  • Develop, execute, and lead discipline marketing and business development strategies in collaboration with the marketing and business development teams.
  • Evaluate and monitor proposal development and contract execution.
  • Evaluate and monitor billing and collections.
  • Serve as a resource for the leadership team throughout the discipline.
  • Consistently monitors the backlog of work and the sharing of resources within the discipline, maximizing staff utilization. Reviews staff utilization regularly and promptly addresses staff not meeting utilization goals.
  • Prepares for the future state of the discipline through succession planning.
  • Responsible for fostering staff professional development, monitoring staffing/recruiting activity, and effectively managing employee relations.
  • Complies with and ensures others' compliance with all CED policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with the safety coordinator on implementing and complying with the Health and Safety Program as it specifically relates to the discipline.
  • Collaborates with other managers within the region and with the Geographic Discipline Leader.
  • Serves as project manager while being a resource for staff on assigned projects and manage completion of projects regarding scope, schedule, quality, and budget.
  • Provide staff/managers with technical assistance and supervision in the preparation of proposals and contracts for assigned projects.
  • Responsible in preparing pertinent information for client/agency meetings and attend, as needed.
  • Develop the skills and abilities of staff which are necessary for successful execution of work duties.
  • Serve as a mentor and coach staff.
  • Manage the performance of assigned staff, conduct performance evaluations, and provide input for salary/bonus discussions.
  • Collaborate with other firms in pursuit of opportunities and manage subconsultant contracts.
  • Manage material testing and training requirements to ensure compliance with company policies and MDOT prequalification.

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering technology or a related field is desired.
  • 10+ years of construction engineering/inspection experience or a related field near MDOT's Metro or University Region Areas is preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience with preparing proposals, developing budgets, tracking budgets, and the associated financial management skills necessary to run a team and monitor the performance of the business.
