Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

To provide professional and technical services for the treatment and care of SMG Neurosurgery patients.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Facilitate appropriated patient admission to appropriate hospital bed, including inter and intra hospital transfers.
  • Perform and dictate History & Physicals, Consultations, Discharge Summaries and SOAP notes on any/all patient floors.
  • Facilitate appropriated outpatient care in terms of all necessary referrals to outside physicians
  • Assists with development of plan of care based on patient assessment.
  • Reviews x-rays and monitors lab values and other diagnostic reports.
  • Performs daily rounds and charts documentation on any/all patient floors.
  • Respond to all general surgery emergencies.
  • Determine need for and perform core specialized diagnostic, therapeutic and other procedures:
  • Initiate and manage cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Take leadership role in all in and outpatient nursing duties including outpatient consultation, follow up exams and surgical scheduling.
  • Manage outpatient prescriptions for surgical patients
  • Monitors and adjusts medications and dosages
  • Participate in endoscopy under the direction of the primary surgeon
  • Take call in accordance with primary covering surgeon
  • Perform minor procedures such as Incision and drainage, evacuation of hematoma, drain removal, Lap Band adjustments, suturing in inpatient or outpatient settings as needed.
  • Urethral catheterization of the bladder
  • Peripheral and or central intravenous catheter insertion
  • Collaboration with the surgeon and other health care professionals for optimal surgical outcome. the duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting the anesthesiologist when applicable
  • Assisting with patient positioning, skin preparation, and draping
  • Providing wound exposure
  • Handling and cutting tissue appropriately to reduce potential for injury
  • Using and manipulating surgical instruments and medical devices skilfully
  • First assisting surgeon in operating room and demonstrating proficiency in all aspects as taught by the supervising physician
  • Providing homeostasis
  • Suturing tissue and closing wounds
  • Assisting in the safe delivery of the patient to the recovery room
  • Communicating to appropriate health care personnel and family members
  • Participating in pre and postoperative care/teaching and discharge planning with physician supervision
  • Pre-assessment of the patient, including review of lab work, etc.
  • Rounding on inpatients, seeing patients in office, performing and assisting in-office procedures
  • Provides patient/family education from admission to discharge re: diet, medications, exercise, risk factors, follow-up visits, etc.
  • Facilitate timely patient discharge
  • Communicates daily
  • Working conditions: will fulfill ambulatory and surgical duties some irregular hours-On Call
  • Working Conditions: Ability to work with diverse staff and patients
  • Practitioners in neurosurgery will work in collaboration with the surgeon(s) and perform various surgical duties consistent with the general accepted standards of clinical practice, including patient positioning, tissue retraction, suturing, and wound closure.
  • Performs and/or assists supervising physician with procedures and patient care as requested
  • Other procedures as designated by attending/supervising physician

Job Requirements
Work Experience * Hospital experience * Surgical rotations completed successfully * Neurosurgery experience preferred.
Education * Graduate of accredited PA/NP Program * Michigan PA/NP License * BCLS * ACLS * Maintain CME activity as required by the State and National licensing board
