Title: Suicide Epidemiologist

$53,955 - $74,360 / Posted Thru: 5-26-24

Location: Hybrid - Lansing, MI Office

Purpose: The Suicide Epidemiologist will be responsible for conducting public health surveillance and epidemiologic analyses in support of the suicide prevention programs in the MDHHS Injury & Violence Prevention Section.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify, locate, and examine utility of applicable extant data systems.
  • Develop an ongoing public health surveillance system focusing on suicide deaths and non-fatal suicide behaviors, as well as proximal and distal risk factors and warning signs.
  • Create and implement data analysis plan.
  • Interpret surveillance results and assess data quality in consultation with subject area experts and supervisor.
  • Working with the PRiSSM Communication Specialist, develop a dissemination plan for suicide surveillance findings.
  • Participate in dissemination of surveillance findings via reports and presentations.
  • Aid in grant reporting and application development.
  • Participate in federal meetings related to suicide and suicide surveillance.
  • Develop and implement an evaluation plan for the suicide surveillance system.
  • Work with MDHHS staff, as well as other state and community partners, to improve extant data systems used in suicide surveillance.
  • Coordinate with members of the PRiSSM team and others to respond to internal and external data requests.
  • Participate in the PRiSSM Partnership meetings, as well as other suicide prevention-related for the purpose of coordinating suicide prevention efforts across the state.
  • Provide technical assistance to partners and as requested by other parties.
  • Participate in technical assistance opportunities from the CDC, including conference calls, national grantee meetings, and any other related meetings/conferences.
  • Document methods and processes.
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Conduct other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a master's degree with a major in epidemiology, public health or related discipline with a minimum of 8 semester (12 term) graduate-level hours in epidemiology and/or biostatistics.

Experience: One year of professional experience as an epidemiologist, or possession of a PhD in epidemiology, required. Experience in statistical analysis preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis. Experience with epidemiology of suicide or other injury-related issue preferred.

  • Excellent organizational, data management, programming, and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of data quality.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, able to complete work in a timely manner and handle multiple tasks at one time with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in SAS preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment. Requires a valid vehicle operator's license to attend off-site meetings, conferences, and trainings. In-state travel to meetings and trainings required. Limited overnight travel, including out-of-state at least once a year, is likely. This position will be located in Lansing, Michigan.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position directly impacts suicide surveillance activities in the MDHHS. Suicide-related data will be provided in a way that helps MDHHS and partners reshape state and community level programming and interventions, and evaluate the impact of state, local and organizational programming, and policy changes on suicide.
