Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under direction of department leadership, develops, implements and/or coordinates highly specialized professional library services in one or more of the following areas: Reference services, System-wide selection, licensing and organization of library materials, Library system-wide website development and oversite, System-wide library curriculum development, instruction and manuscript preparation, System-wide electronic journal management and scholarly activity tracking, Document delivery and interlibrary loan services, or Day-to-day management of a regional library. The customers and end users of these services include physicians, researchers, other clinical service providers, and hospital leadership.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Librarians are assigned duties from the following list.

  • Researches highly complex customer inquiries and provides appropriate responses, including customized bibliographies. Uses advanced critical thinking and analytical skills to develop search methodology and to filter data. These data are used by HFHS clinical and research staff to support evidence-based and cost-effective patient care decision-making. Requires in-depth familiarity with PubMed, the MESH vocabulary and other databases such as Web of Science and Embase, searching the gray literature and proficiency with bibliographic management programs.

  • Consults with clinicians and research teams conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including planning the search strategy, providing database recommendations and writing the search methodology portion of the review.

  • Assists with new and renewal negotiations with vendors of electronic resources on price and access issues for the entire HFHS System. Serves as primary liaison with vendors and coordinates licensing of electronic resources acquired by the libraries, including researching and reviewing license contractual agreements terms. May consult with Supply Chain, Office of the General Counsel, and Information Technology as needed. Requires in-depth knowledge of library electronic resource vendors, pricing strategies, and platforms.

  • Formulates collection development strategies and policies, especially on a system-wide basis. Recommends budget support levels for various collection aspects or sites. Requires knowledge of MARC format, AACR2, and NLM classification. Oversees work of nonexempt staff performing acquisitions, circulation, and technical services duties.

  • Serves as the library system webmaster. Administers, designs, creates, and implements web pages for all of the HFHS libraries to provide system-wide access to the libraries' electronic collections and services and to integrate specialized library software. Knowledge of HTML and web page maintenance required. Responsible for the library's mobile presence, serves as libraries' expert on mobile resources and provides training in the use of the libraries' mobile resources. Oversees system-wide LibGuides content management system and curation platform.

  • Coordinates education and training initiatives and leads curriculum development. On a system-wide basis, develops and delivers classroom-based formal and informal instructional programming in the use of library resources, evidence-based medicine, information literacy, and research skills to groups or individuals.

  • Responsible for system-wide electronic journal management, including journal administration account management, link resolver system (e.g. SFX) maintenance, and OCLC, Serhold, and Open URL maintenance. Works with electronic journal vendors on access issues and troubleshoots complex linking issues and patron connection problems. Tracks usage metrics for cost effective management of the electronic resources collections.

  • Coordinates the libraries system-wide manuscript preparation/CV service. Provides manuscript consultation services, including assisting authors with creating specific citation styles, formatting abstracts, tables and figures, importing data to citation software, providing guidance in journal selection, checking journal impact factors and assisting with specific journal publication submission requirements.

  • Using online bibliographic databases and citation software, coordinates the libraries' tracking and reporting of system-wide scholarly activity. Prepares reports of scholarly activity for individual residency and fellowship programs to support accreditation requirements. Provides data to various departments, including medical specialty departments in support of staff evaluation processes.

  • Uses advanced circulation and interlibrary loan functions to provide requested materials to users. Implements appropriate systems (e.g. ILLiad) to support the provision of interlibrary loan functions. Oversees work of nonexempt staff performing document delivery functions. Monitors and ensures compliance with US Copyright Law and CONTU Guidelines.

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of a regional library (e.g. Wyandotte Hospital Library), including providing reference services, interlibrary loan, and overseeing public access computers. Selects, acquires, and catalogs the library's print resources. Works with the Director to develop a budget for a regional library. May coordinate and support the hospital's system-wide audiovisual systems, including meeting room functionality. Oversees the work of the paraprofessional staff.

  • May guide the work of nonexempt staff and mentor other librarians.

  • May serve as Librarian in Charge in the absence of the Director.

  • Participates on multi-disciplinary HFHS councils.

  • May be asked or allowed to attend relevant local, regional, or national professional meetings or continuing education, in person or by webinar.

  • May work at the HFH Sladen Library, regional hospital libraries, and/or the Lam Archives (1FP). At HFH location, may be required to participate in the evening shift rotation.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.a

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCEREQUIRED:

  • Master'sDegree in Information/Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited program.Certification within the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) isrequired within one year of employment.

  • Two(2) years of professional (post Master's) library experience or one yearprofessional (post Master's) library experience in a medical or an academiclibrary setting (more experience is much preferred).

  • Master'sDegree in Information/Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited programpreferred. Certification within the Academy of Health Information Professionals(AHIP) preferred.

  • Three-four(3-4) years of professional (post Master's) library experience in a medical oran academic library setting preferred.

  • Excellentcritical thinking and analytical skills.

  • Advancedverbal and written skills, including formal and informal presentation skills.

  • Strongorganization, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Ability to workindependently, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.

  • Expertskills in searching major medical and scientific databases including PubMed,CINAHL, and Embase. Excellent internet searching skills.

  • Strongknowledge of evidence based medicine principles and practice.

  • Overallknowledge of library tools, systems, and resources, including integratedlibrary systems (e.g. SirsiDynix), library link resolver software (e.g. SFX),and document delivery/interlibrary loan systems (e.g. ILLiad).

  • Familiaritywith standard library bibliographic databases (e.g. OCLC) and standards (e.g.MARC).

  • Familiaritywith the EndNote citation management program and with the LibGuides contentmanagement and curation platform.

  • Solidtechnology background, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Stronginterpersonal, teamwork, and customer-service skills.

  • Commitmentto lifelong learning and professional development.

  • Abilityto lift, bend, and reach materials on library shelving, including handlingthese materials while standing on rolling ladders and stepstools.
