Primary Responsibilities

HDR is seeking an experienced System Protection & Studies (SPS) Engineer. The primary duties of the SPS Engineer position include responsibility for knowledge and execution of the technical aspects and deliverables of projects assigned and is an experienced, competent engineer who generally understands and can complete all technical requirements of projects of basic to moderate complexity.

Job Duties:

  • Conducting analyses to develop design options, performing modeling and/or calculations
  • Complete engineering calculation reports such as load flow, short circuit, grounding and arc flash studies
  • Perform routine engineering and design tasks, and participate in field reviews or construction observation
  • May work independently on small tasks and may assist senior engineers on larger, more complex projects.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
  • Ability to scope project assignments; provide technical write-ups and estimate man hours for future opportunities
  • Provide testing and commissioning plans
  • Provide a review of engineering work deliverables following HDR's QA/QC procedures
  • Provide mentorship to junior team members

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience doing electrical power system analysis, electrical system planning, protective device application, SCADA, settings and substation design required.
  • Experience with power system analysis software: ETAP, Cape, Aspen, PSEE, etc. is required.
  • Electrical System Design Software knowledge such as ETAP, SKM, and / or CDEGS is highly desirable.
  • Ability to produce design drawings including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, general arrangements, connection diagrams, raceway drawings, and bill of materials
  • Experience with vendor specific relay setting software: Acselerator, UR EnerVista, etc. is required.
  • Familiarity with various types of substation design layouts.
  • Familiarity with redundancy concepts and requirements for substations.
  • Familiarity of substation apparatus, as it pertains to P&C design.
  • Strong software skills: MS Office Suite knowledgeable CAPE, ASPEN and relay vendor software including SEL, GE and ABB.
  • Knowledgeable on both electromechanical as well as digital protective relays.
  • Working knowledge of jobsite electrical hazards and associated safety precautions, including working clearances and personal protective equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm desired
