Job Description

The Advanced Engineering Lab at Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) focuses on advanced technology research and development for world-class vehicles, and currently is looking for a talented and motivated battery modeling engineer to support advanced battery model for xEV applications, including battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles.

This battery modeling Engineer will be responsible for designing and developing advanced battery models pertaining to battery state estimation - state of charge, power, health/ageing, and anomaly, with high fidelity and robustness. You will need to work with battery and vehicle test teams for the model validation data, collaborate with other CAE teams to identify the model gaps and improve the model estimation accuracy, and support overall software build and integration for production vehicle applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Propose and develop advanced empirical/physics-based battery models in battery state estimations of high accuracy and robustness for state of charge, power, temperature, health, and anomaly.
  • Conduct comprehensive literature survey in battery modeling field periodically, determine model improvement approaches, develop and validate the improved models.
  • Analyze numerical simulation and experimental test data, communicate with teams on the analysis results and suggestions on the model development and improvement strategies.
  • Work interactively and efficiently in a multidisciplinary cooperative environment
  • Define test matrix for battery lab measurement and vehicle test to ensure accurate data collection and analysis.
  • Support overall software build and integration for production vehicle applications.
  • Prepare technical reports to communicate with various teams.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Fundamental knowledge in lithium-based cell electrochemistry, mechanisms, and electrochemical modeling
  • Strong background in physics-based modeling for electrochemical & thermal processes of lithium batteries
  • Knowledge of modeling techniques for simulating battery cells, modules, packs, and thermal systems
  • Experience in signal processing, state/parameter estimation algorithms, matrix computations, optimization and numerical methods
  • Strong programming skills in using tools as MATLAB and Python
  • Excellent communication skills and team-oriented attitude
  • Ability to work independently from start to end with minimum supervising.
  • Willingness to learn new knowledge and technology and train teammates.
  • Valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record

Preferred Experience:

  • Master's degree with 5+ years or PhD with 3+ years of experience in in battery state estimation
  • 3+ years of experience with development and testing of battery cells and packs for xEVs application
  • Strong understanding in the high voltage battery pack system and its interaction with other vehicle subsystems
  • Experience in Li-ion battery modeling and simulation for automotive industry or similar area
  • Experience in model-based, and data-driven methods for the battery state estimation
