Job Summary

Orientation and Family Programs is currently seeking a Student Orientation Summer Intern to join their team of professionals.

The Panther Camp intern will gain hands-on experience as a professional staff member within Orientation and Family Programs, specifically focusing on FIU's Panther Camp program. Panther Camp is a two or three-day leadership, involvement, and traditions camp for incoming new students.

Primary duties will include:

  • Planning and implementing multi-day extended orientation sessions (Panther Camp) for incoming first-year and transfer students;
  • Co-supervision of approximately 30 student leaders (Panther Camp Facilitators) and 7 Panther Camp Executive Board members;
  • Initiation of efforts to maintain team and individual motivation throughout the summer, including a focus on excellent customer service;
  • Involvement with informal and formal assessment/evaluation of Panther Camp Facilitators and Panther Camp Executive Board;
  • Oversee aspects of Panther Camp preparation and planning prior to the multi-day experience (Planning Days)
  • Coordinate training sessions for Facilitators and Executive Board on topics related to the extended orientation experience;
  • Facilitate orientation sessions focused on Panther Camp for incoming students and their families;
  • Offer programmatic feedback and suggestions for continuous improvement throughout the summer;
  • Planning, staffing, and overseeing programming during the evening and overnight component of the Freshmen Orientation experience;
  • Serve as the principal on-call staff member for the overnight program and responding as the overnight emergency contact, managing crises, and communicating issues to the Orientation and Residence Life staffs as necessary;
  • Advising and supporting camp committees and education sessions facilitated at camp;
  • Additional tasks during freshmen and transfer orientation sessions throughout the summer on both of FIU's campuses

As part of the Orientation and Family Programs team, this position will also work weekly office hours to aid in the Panther Camp program planning and preparation. In addition to these responsibilities, the NODA intern will have the opportunity to participate in the Panther Camp Overnight retreat prior to the first camp session. Other potential opportunities include learning about different offices/departments of interest on campus, taking on special projects of interest, and assisting our new student orientation programs throughout the summer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 3 semesters of FIU work experience or related experience outside the University with satisfactory or higher from prior student appointment.
  • Requires a letter of recommendation from one prior supervisor.
  • Requires prior completion of FIU Service Excellence training or completion within first 30 days.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently as needed.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of PC operations and specialized software programs, such as PantherSoft and Salesforce.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally, and in writing.
  • Possess a high sense of responsibility and customer service skills.
  • Ability to solve problems independently.
  • Organizational and time-management skills.

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student or three (3) credits as a Graduate student during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated.
  • Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.
Work Schedule
  • 20 hours a week (up to 30 hours allowed during Summer only)
  • Occasional weekends and irregular hours
