Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

The Supervisor is responsible for providing leadership throughout the organization, maintaining a positive attitude and good communication skills with patients, professional and non-professional staff, physicians, affiliates and community. The Supervisor assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates individual patient care in a nursing department according to Nursing Services policies, procedures and standards of care. Accepts responsibility for the supervision and direction of co-workers in the implementation of the nursing care plan. The Supervisor is in charge of the Hospital in the absence of the Administrative Staff.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Provides and documents patient care and administration of medications, performs diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures and treatments in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and adjusts staffing patterns for present shift based on patient census and acuity.
  • Reviews on-coming shift for appropriate staffing, at least 2 hours prior to start of shift.
  • Coordinates patient placement based on admission, discharges and patient acuity.
  • Promotes communication and conflict resolution with all patient units, departments & Medical Staff.
  • Maintains familiarity with Emergency Procedures to supervise hospital codes in the absence of the Incident Commander. (See yellow emergency code book)
  • Defers questions of grievance/discipline to Nursing Management as soon as possible.
  • Responsible for patient care & safety in the Emergency Department, Medical/Surgical unit, Special Care Unit and Outpatient Nursing areas in the absence of their perspective Nursing Managers.

Job Requirements
General Requirements * Current Michigan license to practice as a Registered nurse. * BCLS certification * ACLS certification * Cardiac Arrhythmia Interpretation. * Preferred - Pediatric Life Support course within 1-2 years of hire. * Preferred - TNCC or equivalent within 1-2 years of hire.
Work Experience * Minimum two years nursing experience. * Basic computer knowledge.
Education * Bachelors degree in Nursing.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills * Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to patient served in service area (newborn to geriatric). The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training or experience. * Clinical knowledge and analytic ability necessary to formulate effective nursing care plans and interventions. * Demonstrates critical thinking skills.
